The Ups and Downs of Life and the Table.
The adventure of life significantly improves when you don’t have to travel alone.
I’m going to be honest. These past few months were tough. I moved to a new neighborhood. Members of my family struggled through change and loss. I’ve watched my 86-year-old Dad slowly lose control over his body and strength.
At moments, I’ve desperately searched for stability, resolution, some good news.
It would not be a good thing if I had to move through this season alone.
Or be isolated, and have little or no support through these inevitable seasons of life - that come for all of us.
In mid December, I sat at our 16th table of 2024 - a table filled with pomegranates, evergreens, candles and a beautiful mix of humans from across Denver.
And as we took risks to be honest with one another and share parts of our story, something happened - I heard stories of challenging months, declining parents, and unwanted changes. I was hearing my story, just with different details.
In 2024, we set tables for college students, at conferences, at a church, for a group of executives at a 260-billion dollar company, 500 humans from across Denver, and 600 business leaders. Our guests have included people without homes, girl scouts, tourists, a few influencers and people with hardly any influence at all.
And you know what? At the table, they discovered no matter how different they were from one another, we are all living a similar experience.
And the adventure of life significantly improves when you don’t have to travel alone.
No matter how 2025 plays out for each of us, I know the table represents and offers a place that no matter the change, the losses or the mountain-tops, we can move together, through all seasons in connection, extravagant support, and even joy.
And it just may turn out, in the twists and turns of our story, what we’re looking for is not necessarily a life without obstacles, but people to overcome those obstacles with.
Life will come as it will, but we will always have the table.
